DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE & TOXICOLOGY

OVERVIEW

Forensic Medicine is a branch of medical science that deals with the application of medical and paramedical knowledge to aid in the administration of justice. It encompasses medico-legal examination, forensic pathology, clinical forensic medicine, toxicology, forensic psychiatry, and medical ethics.

The department specializes in various medico-legal services including autopsy examination, clinical examination of victims and accused persons, age estimation, injury assessment, viscera preservation, toxicological interpretation, and expert testimony in courts of law.

The department currently has well-qualified faculty members supported by trained technical and administrative staff.

 

GOAL

The broad goal of teaching undergraduate students in Forensic Medicine is to provide comprehensive knowledge of medico-legal principles, forensic pathology, toxicology, and medical jurisprudence so as to enable them to:

  • Apply medico-legal principles in day-to-day medical practice.
  • Conduct medico-legal examination of living and dead persons.
  • Identify, document, and interpret injuries and poisoning cases.
  • Maintain proper medico-legal documentation and evidence preservation.
  • Practice medicine ethically and in accordance with prevailing laws.
  • Assist the judiciary in the administration of justice.

OBJECTIVES

KNOWLEDGE

The student shall be able to:

  • Recognize the medical-legal implications of poisoning, child abuse, sexual offenses, injuries, and domestic violence. •
  • Understand the principles and practice of medico-legal autopsy and interpretation of post-mortem findings.
  • Identify various types of injuries and correlate them with weapons and mechanisms.
  • Understand the basic principles of toxicology, common poisons, their clinical features, management, and medico-legal implications.
  • Understand the laws pertaining to medical practice, such as those pertaining to documentation, consent, professional misconduct, negligence, medical ethics, and judicial procedures. •
  • Understand relevant provisions under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and other applicable laws concerning medico-legal practice.
  • Recognize various forms of unnatural deaths and interpret post-mortem changes.

 

 

SKILLS

After completing the course, the learner will be capable of 

  • Conduct medico-legal examination of injured persons and prepare medico-legal reports.
  • Examine cases of alleged sexual offences and collect, preserve, and document evidence properly.
  • Perform and assist in medico-legal autopsy under supervision.
  • Identify and preserve viscera and other forensic samples.
  • Estimate age based on physical, dental, and radiological findings.
  • Interpret toxicology reports and basic forensic laboratory findings.
  • Provide expert opinion in court with confidence and clarity.

TEACHING – LEARNING ACTIVITIES

The Department of Forensic Medicine facilitates learning in the second phase of MBBS curriculum as per university regulations.

The department also contributes to teaching Post-Graduate students, Nursing students, and allied health science students.

The University offers PhD programmes in Forensic Medicine & allied forensic sciences, with candidates enrolling each year for research in areas such as forensic pathology, toxicology, and medico-legal studies.

 

ASSESSMENT

  • Periodic formative assessment tests are conducted by the Department of Forensic Medicine.
  • These include internal assessments, terminal examinations, and model examinations.
  • Code numbers are used during evaluation to avoid bias.
  • Summative assessment is conducted by the University at the end of the professional year.

 

CARE FOR SLOW LEARNERS / BRIDGE COURSE

After internal assessments, poor performers and slow learners are identified and counseled.

Special arrangements to improve performance include:

  2. Video-aided learning with discussion
  3. Demonstration with specimens and case records

  5. Extra clinical postings and revision sessions

 

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME

All faculty members are assigned mentorship responsibilities. Each faculty member mentors a group of students.

In addition to the general mentorship programme, small groups of students are allocated to individual staff members who:

  • Provide counseling
  • Guide students in improving medico-legal understanding and practical skills
